Suspect wearing mask, carrying hatchet robs Pizza Hut

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis police are searching for a suspect they say robbed a Pizza Hut while wearing a mask similar to the one in the movie "Scream."

"There's a lot of people that are desperate for money and go to desperate lengths," said Bob Neill who lives in Memphis.

Police said the masked suspect took a hatchet and robbed the Pizza Hut on Summer Avenue.

It happened last Friday just before midnight.

The employee said he ordered her to go to the back of the store where the safe was, then took some cash and fled.

"He had a very distinguished walk," said Jacquelyn Jefferson who works nearby. "It seems like that young man has probably been in this neighborhood walking around casing places."

Surveillance cameras at the Junior League of Memphis Repeat Boutique caught the suspect walking around the corner and heading towards the Pizza Hut.

"I didn't realize we captured all of that out here, but yeah, he was walking up in front of our building and we could see the mask," said Gracie Tuten, the boutique's store manager.

Police are hoping someone can help identify the suspect, while neighbors hope he gets caught before more damage is done.

"I'm glad to hear that everybody survived it okay," said Neill.

Businesses nearby say the incident's a reminder to always be on alert, no matter where you are.

"That was out of the ordinary," said Jefferson. "It's been a long while since we've had a robbery in this area and so we try to look out for each other."

The workers at Pizza Hut weren't able to comment on this robbery.

If you have any information about the suspect, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
