MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis Police are searching for the gunman who opened fire in an East Memphis neighborhood overnight.

Early Friday morning, neighbors on New Willow Road woke up to loud pops.

"It was just like five gunshots and then somebody asked to call the police, and then the police and ambulance showed up."

Tragically it was too late as a 34-year-old was found lying beside the house with several gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead soon after.

"It happened right there, across the street from my house," said neighbor James Kenny.

Kenny told WREG he knew the victim.

"He was a good guy. I don`t see why anybody would want to kill him."

Police said it seems as though the victim got into an argument with someone else before the fatal shots were fired.

Neighbors said they did hear people fighting last night and said a nearby fence was torn down in the midst of it.

It`s not clear whether the fights were connected to the shooting.

Neighbors said it`s important to recognize when situations look like they could be trouble.

"I saw them right there standing outside. I just went on in there inside the house and laid down," said Kenny.

It`s the seventh homicide Memphis Police have handled this week.

Making the overall number of homicides soar close to 180.
