COLDWATER, Miss. -- Thick, black smoke billowed into the sky and was visible for miles.

Drivers captured cell phone video of an 18-wheeler engulfed in flames at the I-55 North entrance ramp in Coldwater.

"He came all the way over the bridge."

The big rig took our a 40-foot section of a concrete barrier. The charred wreckage shut down the entrance ramp well into Wednesday evening.

For almost 6 hours, northbound traffic was backed up almost all the way to Senatobia as officials shut down the right lane.

One driver on his way to work in Southaven was stuck.

"I been sitting here and I went home, come back, see if it had opened up yet," said Brian Davis.

The traffic wasn't just sluggish on I-55 North.

For hours, the stretch of Highway 306 running under I-55 was closed completely.

"I've seen 50 to 100 people probably already having to make a u-turn," said Jim Glass.

MDOT said they will be installing a temporary fix for the railing sometime tomorrow.  A permanent one should come Monday.

It's unclear who much it will cost.
