MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There was a frightening fall off a seventh-floor balcony at an apartment building in East Memphis, and police said this was no accident.
They said the woman's boyfriend pushed her when she wouldn't have sex with him.
A witness said a tree right outside the Glendale Park Apartments off Getwell Road caught one woman's fall after her boyfriend hurled her from the balcony of his apartment early Friday morning.
"When I come out, I just seen the wig hanging up in the tree," the witness said. "Thank God that that tree was there. That tree saved that girl's life."
Police said the woman told them she was drinking shortly before the fall.
They said her boyfriend, Washington Norment, admitted to pushing her off the balcony when she wouldn't sleep with him.
"I know she was hurt. She had to been. That was too far to have fallen and not be hurt," the witness said.
Surprisingly, even after that horrific fall, people said the woman was able to actually stand up on her own two feet.
"She did get up walking, but she was limping a little bit," a building resident, who didn't want to be identified, said.
The whole ordeal has people who live in this building concerned, worried one man, yet again, might take his rage to horrific heights.
"Just imagine if he was up there with us and, say, he just was mad at somebody else and then wanted to take it out on one of us and throw us off the balcony," the resident said.
As for the victim, police said she has multiple injuries to her back and went to the hospital in noncritical condition.
"I told her that she needed to go to the hospital, cause she wasn't gonna go," the witness said.
Norment, 62, remains in the Shelby County Jail, charged with aggravated assault. He will be in court Monday.
