Ole Miss police investigating sexual assault on campus

OXFORD, Miss. -- University of Mississippi Police are investigating a recent sexual assault on campus.

Around midnight, the woman was waiting for a taxi on Poole and Chucky Mullins near Fraternity Row when she was picked up by a stranger.

She was dropped off two hours later at Rebel and Jackson.

She told police she had been sexually assaulted.

"My heart breaks for this young lady. Our young ladies here, we want them to feel safe."

Casey Costin with one of the campus ministries said he's praying for the victim.

"Certainly you want to remember the young lady and remember that it's hard to speak up for yourself after something like that."

Some in the community told WREG they worried and wanted to know why it took so long for police to tell them about the incident.

The incident happened more than a week ago, but students were just notified this past Friday.

"It should definitely be a big thing that everyone feels safe. They should never have a fear that something like that should happen."

At this point, police do not have a good description of the suspect.

They were told he was driving a van or an SUV.
