MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man sits in jail after police say he dragged his 7-month pregnant girlfriend across the house, all because she wouldn't have sex with him.
A good Samaritan stepped in, possibly saving the pregnant woman's life.
Police said a woman was awoken by screams in a Northeast Memphis apartment complex near Bartlett early Friday morning.
It was just before 4 a.m. and the noise was coming from the apartment downstairs.
Police said the woman decided to get up and see if everything was alright.
"Wow, I commend her, I really do," said neighbor Barbara Boykin.
Police said when the neighbor got to the apartment she saw a woman inside being abused.
At seven months pregnant, police said the victim was being dragged on her stomach across the living room floor.
This after being choked and thrown to the ground.
The suspect: her 24-year-old boyfriend, Courtney Willis.
"That's pretty bad," said neighbor Detonsha McKinnie. "That’s terrible. That’s very terrible.”
Officers say the neighbor told Willis to stop, or she’d call the police.
She then brought the victim to her apartment and called 911.
"Most definitely I would get involved, and I’m really glad someone felt the need to do so," said Boykin.
"I feel like that was the right decision, but you know, you never know what’s behind the door, though, so you got to be careful about that," said McKinnie.
Willis reportedly got violent after the victim told him she didn’t want to have sex with him.
First responders were able to provide medical assistance for the victim, who said she was in pain and worried about her unborn child.
"Something like that is something that should never happen," said Boykin.
Police arrested Willis and found he had two warrants out for him.
One for motor vehicle burglary and one for theft.
He’s now also charged with assault.
WREG tried to reach the neighbor who helped this victim, along with the victim herself but wasn't able to get in touch with either one of them as of Friday evening.
