Mother charged after a second baby dies while sleeping with her
PEACH BOTTOM, Pa. — “When my son passed away you know I feel like I just died, it took my life with him.”
William Kyle said he’s torn between emotions walking around his Peach Bottom home on Thursday.
Torn between anguish over the death of his 2-month-old son, anger over the whole situation and a sense of abandonment.
He said he was left in the dark about what’s going on.
“I was sleeping on the couch and got up to go to work and I don’t know, they called me and I was at Baltimore.”
Kyle’s wife, 28-year-old Jessica Harper, was charged with criminal homicide in the death of the couple’s infant.
Court documents said the baby suffocated after sleeping in the same bed with Harper.
“They called me and told me that he quit breathing and so I knew.”
Police said Pediatricians warned Harper time and time again not to sleep with the baby.
But according to court documents she told them she was quote “going to do it anyway.”
Sadly it was not the first time sleeping with a baby has led to tragedy for Harper.
Police said this is her second child to die like this within the last five years.
“You’ve already lost one kid from positional asphyxia and it’s absolutely outrageous conduct that you don’t take extra care with another one,” said Lancaster County DA Craig Stedman. “Your number one priority is to make sure you don’t lose another one and you know this child relied on her as her protector.”
Meanwhile Kyle said he never imagined this would happen again.
Reporter: “After the first time did you pressure her did you say ‘hey, you need to take this more seriously?'”
“Sure I did. You know who expects anything like this?”
Kyle said he is not the father of the first child who passed away.
He told the news media his wife would never hurt their child on purpose.
“If I had any thought in my mind that she killed my son on purpose I would have killed her.”
