Clerk, suspect both arrested following attempted robbery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Shots were fired during a hold-up at a Parkway Village convenience store.

WREG was there as police took the clerk of the Citgo Station away in handcuffs.

His boss told us he was being questioned about an overnight robbery.

Police said the clerk was stocking the shelves when Al Rutherford came in with a knife and demanded money.

The clerk told police he fought the suspect out of the store, but police said Rutherford showed up at a home on Cloister Avenue with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Cameras were rolling as paramedics worked on him in the back of an ambulance.

Rutherford told police he was shot when he got into an argument with the clerk.

Police said now they are trying to get access to the store surveillance tape to figure out exactly what happened.

As of Tuesday evening, the store clerk is not facing any charges.

Rutherford was charged with attempted aggravated robbery.
