MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The gas station off Highway 51 and Thomas sees traffic all day and all night.
It's open 24 hours and known for being a safe spot for the neighborhood.
"I come by here every day coming home and going to work," said Barbra Fisher.
"This is the only gas station in the area that I do feel safe. Like even at night I'll stop," said Anhi Morton.
That's why news of a shooting took everyone by surprise.
Police told WREG 35-year-old Leandra Dewey is responsible.
According to officers, they got a call just before midnight a man had been shot in the parking lot.
The victim's friend told police the victim went inside to get something to drink.
When he came out, Dewey shot him and ran away.
Here's where things get a little bizarre.
According to a police report, officers said while they were investigating they heard gunshots a few blocks away at Dellwood and Baskin.
That's where they said they found Dewey and arrested him.
People we talked to were concerned, not just because the shooting happened at a gas station that sees a lot of traffic, but because it took place right across the street from busy Highway 51.
"It's very busy out here. That's one of the reasons why I stop because it's lighted and it's always cars coming by."
On Friday, WREG's Shay Arthur discovered Dewey was on the streets after a history of arrests.
Several of them for violent crimes like aggravated assault.
