MUW creates scholarship to honor murdered nuns
COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Woman has created a scholarship to honor two nuns brutally murdered inside their home in Durant.
According to the school, both Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill graduated from the school’s nursing program.
“So many of our students have been touched by the selfless giving of Sister Margaret and Sister Paula to those in need,” Dr. Sheila Adams, dean of the College of Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology told WJTV. “They will be greatly missed by all of us, especially those they ministered to on a daily basis. This is a tragic loss, and we hope this scholarship will honor the spirit of their lives.”
Sister Held earned a master’s degree from the university in 1994 while Sister Merrill received her bachelor of science in nursing in 1988.
Both women continued to be involved in the school after their graduation.
The new scholarship will be called the Held-Merrill Scholarship Fund.
