Property manager, mother charged with stealing from tenants

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Memphis apartment manager is accused of stealing rent payments, and her mother was also allegedly in on the scheme.

Candace Monie, 40, formerly managed Levi Landing and Lakeview Manor Apartment Complex in southwest Memphis.

She was indicted on charges of identity theft trafficking and theft over $1,000.

Monie collected money orders from tenants that were meant as rent payments, but she instead altered the payable-to line and deposited them into her own bank account, according to the Office of the Shelby County District Attorney General. Three of the money orders were changed to be deposited in her mother's account, according to the DA's Office.

In total, $6,729 in stolen money orders was deposited into Monie's account, and $1,294 went into her mother's, according to the DA's Office.

The alleged crimes happened between September 2014 and May 2015.

The mother, Margaret Moore, 61, was also indicted, on charges of identify theft and theft over $1,000.
