MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A first-degree murder charge has been filed in the death of a Shelby County inmate.

Daniel Smith, 36, was charged after Leonard Nelson was found dead in his cell at 11:30 a.m.  Wednesday.

Nelson’s death was originally thought to be a suicide, but has since been determined to be a homicide.

Nelson was reportedly behind bars for the sexual exploitation of a minor and aggravated burglary.

Authorities said the two got into an argument before Nelson’s death.
