Woman sentenced in deaths of two 11-year-olds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis woman who pleaded guilty to charges in the deaths of two 11-year-old boys was sentenced on Tuesday.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, Sparkel Hastings, 27, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for the 2015 incident.

On January 24, Hastings was driving westbound on Jones Road when she left the road and hit Joshua McDowell and Darryl Howard as they were walking on the sidewalk.

McDowell died shortly after the incident at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Howard died two days later.

Investigators said Hastings was driving erratically when the incident occurred.

She later pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide, aggravated assault and driving without a license.
