CORDOVA, Tenn. -- Charles Sanders was in court on Monday for what deputies said happened inside a home on Bridgewater in Cordova.

A 4-year-old girl is recovering after deputies said her 2-year-old brother shot her in the foot over the weekend.

Deputies report the kids found Sanders' gun hidden under the couch in the living room.

The little girl was rushed to the hospital in stable condition and is expected to be OK.

Neighbors told WREG they are still in shock.

"It was very sad to me and it was carelessness," Mary Nesbit said. "They need to be more careful how they lay down things that can harm the baby or themselves. You know? Because the baby could've shot one of them also. We are very concerned."

According to deputies, the children's mother had no idea the gun was inside of the home.

Sanders is the only person facing child abuse/neglect and reckless endangerment.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Officer reminds people to keep weapons in a safe place and away from your children.

Officials said the situation could have had a different outcome.

Sanders is expected back in court on September 22.
