MEMPHIS, Tenn–For Tigers fans, the wait is over – or, at least, half the wait is over. On Thursday, the University of Memphis released the non-conference portion of its 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule. Of the 13 non-league encounters, 10 are set to be played at FedExForum.
An 11th home contest is the Tigers’ annual exhibition game versus Christian Brothers University Nov. 12.
The Tigers’ non-conference regular-season schedule features:
· Nine teams that played in the 2014 postseason
· Five NCAA Tournament participants (Baylor, Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, Stephen F. Austin, Wichita State)
· Three NIT participants (High Point, Illinois, Indiana State)
· One CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) participant (USC Upstate)
· Four conference champions (Gonzaga, High Point, Stephen F. Austin, Wichita State)
· Two teams ranked in ESPN.com and CBSSports.com summer polls (Gonzaga, Wichita State)
· Ten teams with overall winning records in 2013-14
· Five nationally-televised games (ESPN/ESPN2/Fox Sports 1) to date
Following its Nov. 12 exhibition, Memphis tips off regular-season play Nov. 18 against Wichita State in Sioux Falls, S.D. The contest, scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start as part of ESPN’s 24-hour College Hoops Marathon, is set to be play at the Sanford Pentagon.
It is the first time since 2003-04 that Memphis will not play its season opener at home. The Tigers’ 2003-04 season opener was played against Wake Forest in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Tigers’ 2014-15 home opener is Nov. 22 versus High Point. The remaining games on Memphis’ non-conference home slate are Prairie View Nov. 24, Stephen F. Austin Dec. 2, Bradley Dec. 6, Oklahoma State Dec. 13, USC Upstate Dec. 17, Oral Roberts Dec. 20 and Western Illinois Dec. 23. The date for the Tigers’ contest against Jacksonville State will be announced later.
The Dec. 13 Oklahoma State contest is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) tip on ESPN2.
The Nov. 24 Prairie View and Dec. 2 Stephen F. Austin games are a part of the Tigers’ participation in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. In addition to those two home games, Memphis travels to Las Vegas Nov. 27-28 for two games. It is the first in-season tournament/event Memphis has played in Las Vegas in the program’s history. It’s also the first time the Tigers are playing in Las Vegas since a 1997 NIT setback to UNLV.
The Tigers open play Nov. 27 in Las Vegas against Baylor, a 2014 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen participant. The Memphis-Baylor encounter is slated to tip at 11 p.m. (CT) Thanksgiving night on Fox Sports 1. The following night (Nov. 28), the Tigers will meet Illinois or Indiana State at 7 or 9:30 p.m. (CT) on Fox Sports 1.
Memphis’ only true road non-league contest is at Gonzaga Jan. 31 in Spokane, Wash. ESPN2 is televising the Jan. 31 encounter at 9 p.m. (CT).
The Tigers are a perfect 3-0 in their previous trips to Spokane, but this season, the Memphis-Gonzaga is scheduled for the Bulldogs’ on-campus arena, the McCarthey Athletic Center. The three previous meetings in Spokane were held at the Spokane Arena.
