Southaven parks & rec director fired two weeks after failed conviction appeal

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Southaven’s parks and recreation director Michael Mullins has been fired, an alderman confirmed to WREG.

“We terminated Mike Mullins as Southaven Park Director, and appointed Wes Brown,” said Shirley Beshears, after a specially called meeting on Mullins’ employment was held.

All of the other aldermen refused comment, including Mayor Darren Musselwhite, citing a personnel issue.

But Beshears, the only woman on the board, said she sympathized with the assault victim.

“We’re not going to tolerate assault conviction by department heads,” Beshears said.

The woman Mullins inappropriately touched worked in the same building as he.

She told us, “I feel sorry for his family, but am proud the city did the right thing.”

Mullins was found guilty last year, and lost an appeal earlier this month.
