MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A company that focuses on healthy eating is bringing its headquarters to Memphis, and jobs along with it.
LYFE Kitchen is a California-based restaurant chain that aims to combat obesity by using cleaner ingredients.
6201 Poplar used to be the Sharky’s Gulf Grill, but by the end of this year, LYFE Kitchen will move into the space.
Co-founder Mike Donahue said, “People can go in and have familiar, great tasting dishes that they’re used to, and also know that they’re affordable and good for them.”
Memphis is known for barbecue and southern food, but Donahue insists there’s no better place to convince people to trade fried for fresh.
All of their dishes come in at under 600 calories, and they use local ingredients.
“We have very strong purchasing standards,” Donahue told WREG. “We emphasize local first, organic when possible…Obviously all-natural ingredients.”
Donahue said, in moving their headquarters here, LYFE Kitchen will bring a variety of job openings.
“Many of the positions we’ll need as we grow, such as accounting, payroll, marketing, you name it…Development, construction. They’ll want to house in Memphis,” he said.
Even though there were other options, the city of Memphis didn’t have to pay a dime for the company to settle on locating here.
“The private sector should manage it fund these types of actives,” Donahue said. “So, we didn’t even try for incentives or some competitiveness with other states.”
LYFE Kitchen plans on bringing two restaurants to Memphis. One will open by the end of the year. The other will open sometime next year.
