KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo public safety officer saved a choking woman Saturday morning.

Officer Jason Gates pulled the woman over for a red light violation at about 11:20 a.m.

He said he initially thought she was trying to get out of a ticket, but quickly realized she needed help.

Dash cam video shows Gates hit the woman on the back, and when that fails, pulling her from the car to administer the Heimlich maneuver.

Gates says he’s never used the Heimlich maneuver before in his nine-year career.

“I’m just glad that I was there and it worked,” he said.
