SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The Southaven narcotics officer who was shot in the leg Friday afternoon was released to go home Saturday.

The officer was making a drug arrest in the 1800 block of Coral Hills when police say the man being arrested lunged for a gun.

The officer and the man were fighting over the weapon when it went off.

Southaven Police Chief Tom Long told WREG, “We’re doing the best to get the message across about crime in our community, we’re not going to tolerate it.”

Police have not officially released the identity of the officer.

The suspect is in custody.
