MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A baby was found beside a dumpster in the 4100 block of Kirby Parkway Thursday night.
A witness told police she saw a woman try to throw something in a trash bin behind All About Hair Salon. When she couldn't, the woman put it next to the dumpster.
The witness said the woman took off she she noticed someone saw her, and when she went over to see what was left, she found a newborn on the ground.
The witness banged on All About Hair Salon's door. Paula Martin was working late inside.
"I was here working and a lady knocked on the door saying that someone left a baby at the dumpster," Martin said.
Martin called 911, unsure if the whole thing was a joke.
"I waited on the police, and they got here. Sure enough, someone left a baby," she said.
Martin said the baby was naked and wrapped in a light blue blanket.
The baby, who appeared to be unharmed and is believed to be less than a week old, was taken to Le Bonheur.
The witness said the female appeared to be 17 to 20 years old.
If you can help police identify the baby, call 901-636-3330.
“There are so many options available for those who are struggling with the birth of a child. Tennessee State law allows parents to drop off unwanted newborns to local safe havens such as hospitals, medical clinics and walk-in clinics which are located throughout the Memphis area,” MPD Director Toney Armstrong said.
“Thankfully a citizen witnessed this child being placed on the ground and called police and fire personnel for assistance," he added. "We are trying to locate the mother of this child, but our number one concern at this time is to make sure this child is safe and well taken care of.”
