Father arrested for leaving children in apartment that caught fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The father of the three children left alone in an apartment which caught fire, has been arrested.

Jesse Townsend has been charged with child abuse and neglect after leaving his three children at home Friday evening.

Investigators determined the children were playing with a cigarette lighter in a bedroom.

Workers from Ram Property services saw smoke and broke a door down to rescue the children, all of whom are under the age of seven.

The fire happened at the Pendleton Apartments in the 1700 block of Pendleton.

The apartment suffered heavy damage.

Police are now investigating why the children were left alone.

Townsend is being held on a $50,000 bond.
