MEMPHIS, Tenn. – You could call it an inside job, but not the kind you usually hear about.
A woman was arrested early this morning after police said she hid inside Summer Grocery before it closed, took items from the store and then called them to come let her out.
Mildred Johnson told police she was in the bathroom and accidentally got locked inside the business.
Today, customers at the store weren’t buying her story.
“She’s locked up there? Hey, dumbest criminals,” said one man.
Police weren’t buying the woman’s story either.
They said surveillance video showed Johnson come into the store about 30 minutes before closing, then came out of the bathroom once everyone was gone.
They said it also showed her taking cash from the register, along with a loaded gun, a cell phone, lottery tickets and cigarettes.
Officers found all of the stolen items on her.
“She definitely wasn’t smart at all. I don’t know what would possess her to do that, but a thief is a thief, ” said Tony Dyson.
Johnson is charged with burglary and tampering with or fabricating evidence.
She is locked up on $40,000 bond.
