MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man was shot in the face while doing yard work at his home in Hickory Hill. He was able to call 9-1-1 for help.

Sheriff Deputy Mattew Keaton said, "When the call came in from the victim, he said somebody shot him while trying to rob him in his yard."

A neighbor told WREG, "It bothers you because it's right next door."

He didn't want to be identified,  but told WREG he heard the gunshot just before 8 Friday morning.

"I thought it was fireworks. I didn't think anything of it because we've been hearing them since yesterday."

Sheriff Deputies say it all happened so fast, no one saw the person who shot him. The victim was taken by helicopter to Regional Medical Center.

"That is the unfortunate thing about it being Fourth of July. Gunfire can be masked as fireworks," Keaton said.

Neighbors say this is a busy road where people are usually out walking. They hope someone passing by saw something.

In the meantime, they will be more vigilant, even while doing everyday chores like mowing the lawn.

"Do you carry or not? You know what I mean? Just to cut the grass!"

Anyone with information on who may be responsible should call the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at 379-7625 or CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH.

Yes, Christopher, I agree. Just say a prayer for this family. I believe yard work should be done in twos now — one mowing and one standing guard with a loaded Machetti.

Stupid criminals. I always leave my wallet in the house when doing yard work. I would imagine most others do as well.

I do however, have my Glock on my hip.

Just another typical day in Memphis! I’m not sure why they even bother the report it, we all know it happens daily! Nothing new, just move on and try to live another day in this “great” city of ours.

So let me see, Hickory Hood is in Memphis, Why is the sheriff deputy answering calls,
Oh yeah, it must be this Blue Flu epidemic Memphis has I guess.

Lets face it, the United States is a combat zone…..especially Memphis. At least in Baghdad, Iraq you know why they are shooting at you but in one’s own Country….amazing.

When family and friends ask when I’m returning to Memphis….I’ll show them this article… can’t even cut your grass without body armor.

That’s a shame you have to have bodyguards outside with you in order to do yard work.Ridiculous…This is why I’m leaving Memphis.I know crime is everywhere but this is too much.

I have always heard that West Tennessee was very corrupt and dangerous. Maybe you people need to find someone like Buford Pusser to clean it up. Some people say he was good and others say he was corrupt. I don’t know personally what it’s like there and from what I read and hear, I don’t want to find out.

This is exaclty why I have taken the gun safety course, it teaches you to wear your weapon at all times, armed & ready.
