MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man was shot in the face while doing yard work at his home in Hickory Hill. He was able to call 9-1-1 for help.
Sheriff Deputy Mattew Keaton said, "When the call came in from the victim, he said somebody shot him while trying to rob him in his yard."
A neighbor told WREG, "It bothers you because it's right next door."
He didn't want to be identified, but told WREG he heard the gunshot just before 8 Friday morning.
"I thought it was fireworks. I didn't think anything of it because we've been hearing them since yesterday."
Sheriff Deputies say it all happened so fast, no one saw the person who shot him. The victim was taken by helicopter to Regional Medical Center.
"That is the unfortunate thing about it being Fourth of July. Gunfire can be masked as fireworks," Keaton said.
Neighbors say this is a busy road where people are usually out walking. They hope someone passing by saw something.
In the meantime, they will be more vigilant, even while doing everyday chores like mowing the lawn.
"Do you carry or not? You know what I mean? Just to cut the grass!"
Anyone with information on who may be responsible should call the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at 379-7625 or CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH.
