MEMPHIS, Tenn–Thomas Carrier, a two-time alumnus of the University of Memphis with over 10 years of experience in the facility management industry, has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Events and Facilities at his alma mater. Athletic Director Tom Bowen made the announcement.

Carrier will serve as the game administrator for all Tiger home athletic events. He will function as the on-site contact for the university’s on-campus athletic facilities as well as serve as the official liaison between the athletic department and off-campus facilities including FedExForum, Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium and the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
In his new position, he will also play a key role in oversight and planning of new athletic facilities projects.
Carrier joins the University of Memphis Athletic Department after nine years in event operations at FedExForum and working for the Memphis Grizzlies. He began his career with a two-year internship in event services for SMG and The Pyramid.
“In his role with FedExForum, our staff worked with Thomas on a regular basis,” Bowen said. “Over the last two years I have seen Thomas excel in carrying out his responsibilities at Tiger Basketball games and other events at the arena. We are fortunate he has accepted a position within our department and look forward to his development and oversight of our event and facility operation efforts.”
At FedExForum, Carrier worked his way from being an event operations intern to serving as an event coordinator and event manager. In 2012 he was named Senior Manager, Event Operations at the downtown Memphis arena.
Over the last two years he was responsible for the day-to-day event operations and management at the venue. In his final role at FedExForum, Carrier managed all coordination for arena events. He administered facility projects, coordinated internal facility usage and had oversight of building conversions.
Carrier supervised a staff of six full-time employees as well as 40 part-time conversion crew employees. He also supervised vendor partners in the areas of building engineering, security and housekeeping.
This past spring, Carrier was the Facility Manager for the inaugural American Men’s Basketball Championship tournament as well as the NCAA Division I Men’s South Regional.
Carrier was hired as an event coordinator at FedExForum in October, 2006. After a year and a half in that role, he was promoted to event manager. He held the title of event manager for four years before being promoted to senior manager in July of 2012.
In addition to his work in facilities and event management, Carrier has passed along his knowledge and experience of the field to students at the University of Memphis as an adjunct professor of Event Management.
Carrier began his career with FedExForum and the Grizzlies, serving as an event operations intern during the 2005-06 academic year while completing his Master’s of Education degree in Sports and Leisure Commerce from the University of Memphis (May, 2006). He received his Bachelor’s degree in Sports and Leisure Studies, graduating cum laude from the U of M in May, 2004.
Carrier is engaged to be married in August to Marina Barrett, a two-time Memphis alumnus and employee with University College.
