MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Police investigated two shootings overnight in Cordova.

One person was taken to the hospital after being wounded in a drive-by shooting at Houston Levee and Macon and another man was found shot to death in the 500 block of South Sanga.

The two shootings are not related, but happened within miles of each other.

Police said at around 11 p.m. they found a man in the front yard of house on Sanga.

People who live on that street said earlier in the night, 33-year-old Jeffrey Roth got into a fight with a neighbor and apparently went back to that neighbor's house and was shot.

Police said after reviewing the evidence, the District Attorney chose not to charge the 28-year-old shooter.

At 12:30 a.m. Shelby County deputies responded to the drive-by shooting on North Houston Levee.

The victim told deputies he was driving near Houston Levee and Macon when someone from another car started shooting.

He was able to drive to a McDonalds nearby and get help.

"Wow, that's not good," said Louis Barajas.

People who live just around the corner said it was the last thing they wanted to hear.

"Because I don't want to move anymore. I moved here from another place to here because I thought it was safer," said Barajas.

We looked at crime statistics for past years and saw that neither neighborhood were hot spots for crime.

Most of the crimes reported were thefts, burglaries and simple assaults.

Neighbors are hoping the recent incidents aren't a sign of things to come.

"It's discouraging to know wherever I go it follows," said Richard Robison.

The sheriff's office has not said if there are any suspects in the drive-by shooting.

We need a curfew in Memphis, and the national guard, it is obvious that the leadership in Memphis is not quality to handle this city.

    When I’m elected Mayor, here’s 10 things I’ll do;
    1. Cut 10% of the City work force
    2. Reduce all 6 figure salaries to 5.
    3. Freeze Property Taxes for my term
    4. Have rolling Curfews for high crime neighborhoods by Zip codes.
    5. De-annex Hickory Hill and Cordova.
    6. Stop the Minority requirements for City bids.
    7. Create a City Department that inspects all Rental properties(like a home inspector) for renters. The fee is paid by the Landlords.
    8. Vacant properties are taxed at 2X the current property tax rates. Vacant means an occupancy rate of less than 80% per address for a Calendar year.
    9. Reduce the MATA routes by 50% and make Tuesdays a ride free day for all Memphians.
    10. No new development contracts for Developers.

…”Shelby County deputies say the victim was driving north on Houston Levee when someone in another car started shooting at him.” ,,(and the driver was as innocent as newborn snow….)

Until you get rid of the people who are causing the problem nothing will change. To quote Henri “we didn’t ask to come here”. So send them back to where they came from with the conditions of their ancestors and maybe they’ll learn what a privilege it is to live here and maybe start becoming decent human beings instead of worthless thugs.

Anna your remarks are both ignorant and racist. Send “them back”? You mean “all” criminals? Or just those who happen to be black? Sounds like you are the one who really does not know what a privilege it is to live here. Crime has no name, color, race or religion. Maybe you should look at the “real” world and not your “jaded” world. You ever wonder why you can’t get along with other races? Look in the mirror and listen to yourself!!

YEP. YES. Uh-Huh. If you didn’t ask to come here, or don’t think you belong…LEAVE!!!

It was in Cordova last year where I saw a group of young white males truck got searched and the SCS pulled out a large bafg of drugs and money… They let the young white males go, now tell me whats wrong with that picture. Also there is nowhere in the story where it states the victims where black.. STOP THE RACIST REMARKS!!!!

  • officer

I got to laugh @ u people…because I know u don’t know that we have more meth locations in the Houston levee & cordova area than through out the city..100% of the arrest was white

  • officer

I forgot u see there r many things n your area that doesn’t make the news..I suggest 2 all of u while trying 2 pinpoint the crimes of race. know who your children r associated with..and what is going on n the household as well.

Good news is the Police Director says crime is down. Cordova is the next Hickory Hills. Its best to get out of Shelby County.

With as many blacks in the city & committing crimes these days It’s simply a given that the newest reports are about blacks. As soon as you people admit it the sooner it stops! That’s just fact.
