WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new report shows the U.S. government is spending about $264 a month for every American receiving a premium subsidy through the Affordable Care Act.

The Department of Health and Human Services reports on average, customers are paying about $82 a month.

HHS found 87% of the 5.4 million people who signed up, qualify for subsidies.

The credits are based on income, so the less you earn, the more you can get.

Officials say taxpayers will spend an estimated $ 12 billion this year to cover those subsidies.
