Memphians struggle in opening round of U.S. Open

Pinehurst, NC-Memphians David Gossett and Casey Wittenberg are over par after the first round of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.  Gossett shot a six-over-par 76 on Thursday.  Wittenberg opened with a four-over-par 74.  Germany’s Martin Kaymer, the 2010 PGA Champion, is the first round leader after shooting a five-under-65.  He has a three shot lead over four golfers at -2.  Phil Mickelson, who’s looking to win the only Grand Slam event that has alluded him, shot an even-par-70.
