CHICAGO, Ill. — More than a frightening moment for a family when the 103rd floor observation deck on which they were standing started cracking beneath them.
The family was 1,353 above Chicago when The Ledge at the Willis Tower started making a cracking noise.
Formerly known as the Sears Tower, the observation deck has long been a popular destination for tourists.
The family who snapped the pic was visiting from California and told WGN-TV they had just joked with employees about the strength of the glass which juts out from the side of the building.
“They jokingly and confidently responded, ‘It’s unbreakable,’ so we just went on,” said Alejandro Garibay to WGN-TV.
A spokesman for Willis Tower told the Sun Times that what cracked was a protective coating on the glass structure and not the glass itself. The spokesman said the protective coating worked exactly how it was supposed to work.
The deck is currently closed.
