Police: Southaven officer hit by car; shoots & kills driver

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — A man who a Southaven police officer said hit him with a car died after being shot by that officer.

The shooting happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the Big Lots store parking lot in the 800 block of Stateline Road

District Attorney John Champion said from what he knows right now, he believes this shooting was justified.

He said the suspect not only ran over an officer, but also tried to run over him again.

“It’s one of those situations that got completely out of control for no reason,” said Champion. “He ran over the officer, backed up, was about to run over the officer again, and shots were fired.”

Undercover officers met a drug dealer in the Big Lots parking lot, and when they moved in to make an arrest, they say the driver took off, running over an officer.

That officer fired his gun, and so did at least one other officer.

The driver was hit and died on the way to the hospital.

Police arrested another suspect in the car, and found a small child, who is now in the care of the Department of Human Services.

Champion said from what he knows right now, he believe the officers did nothing wrong.

“I have been briefed on the actual sequence of events and I don’t see any misconduct on the part of the officers at all.”

Witnesses say they saw the police officer who was run over stand up after being hit, so it looks like he’s going to be OK.

Police handed over this case to the Desoto County Sheriff’s Office.

“Since it’s our shooting, we contacted them the local district attorney and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be coming to work this shooting for us,” said Tom Long, the chief of Southaven Police.

Investigators spent hours mapping the crime scene and gathering statements from witnesses.

The DA said he’s going to be taking all the evidence gathered and make an official decision soon about whether the shooting was justified.

For now, he isn’t releasing the officers name or the man who was shot and killed.

If someone is attempting to escape and hits or attempts to hit an officer or others in the process, that officer has every right to use lethal force to put the driver of the vehicle down. Of course, I’m sure some idiot is going to say he used excessive force.

Details, details, opinions, complaints…..In summation, one less thug running the streets. And that is a very good thing.

Black thugs need to learn to sell their crack in Memphis. Southaven don’t play bro. Know what im sayen cuz. Its all good if ya stays in the hood.

I have to admit Big J you racist sons of €|+<#£{ find every opportunity to be a racist. Memphrica only a dumda$$ like you would come up with that.

    • midtown mike

There are are many others besides Big J who refer to Memphis as “Memfrica.” Even the spell check on my phone acknowledged “Memfrica.”

      Go figure.

    • Harry

Lighten up Telcorius. It’s all good. Stay in Memphis and things be cool. Southaven don’t play with thugs.

Those who choose the life of crime whether they are white, black, Hispanic, Indian, arab, Muslim, or whatever have no fear of the law. The judicial system is a joke and prison is not feared. They have no respect for police officers because they majority of officers time is spent harassing motorist generating revenue for the cities and counties. If you want to control crime then police should be proactive and stop harassing innocent motorist over a tag light that no one ever thinks to check. The judicial system need to be stern and strict and prisons need to be hard backbreaking time. Maybe then some of the petty criminals will think twice before committing a crime. Just my thoughts I may be wrong but until proven otherwise I will stick with this.

Arabic is a race & language. Muslim is not a race or even a religion. Islam is the “belief system” of Muslims. This one point that all true Christians must know in order to avoid being “racist”.

    • Big J

All you have to do Telco is go look at the Desoto County Jail Docket and you will see the insane amount of blacks with a Memphis address arrested in Desoto County. Sorry if that makes me racist.

  • JoeBo&Johnlickscocks

You’re right mike, my spell check changes my spelling all the time to memfrica. Telco go figure. Guess my phone is Racist

Don’t do drug deals in a parking lot that is clearly visible from a busy highway in a community that has superb police protection from Memphis garbage! And if that statement is offensive to you as a Memphis resident, join together to stop the racism and hate by promoting actions that your friends, family and neighbors can be proud of! Stop gang banging and drug dealing, be a productive member of society and teach your children to do the same! Prayers to the families of both and praise that the infant wasn’t harmed.

Thug daddys needs to let baby mama watch dem kids while daddy be makin a drug deal. Dont worry baby’s mama…we got an EBT card with you name on it.

How does anyone know what Race the Drug dealer was? I didn’t c where they said. But no matter the race nobody wins when a person is killed. But I don’t blame the Police bc the Guy tried to kill him by running over Him. If it’d been me I would got what I had comming.

Because this is not the first, second, or third time this has happening. It’s more like the 50th time in last 5 years. Both Blacks and Whites have both tried to flee when approached by police when doing wrong in those 50 times, the only difference is when the perpetrators are Black the police shoots but when the perp is White, the police exercises some type of restraint.

      • mr matt

oh paaleeez “we blk folk are so mistreated when we run cops over” and what facts do you base this statement on?

    • Herschel

Southaven police are the best in the world at what they do. They are friendly and caring people bc I personally know some of them. But to deal Druggs a half mile from the police dept is an insult to them. They care about people but u better not Muck with them the wrong way. They stay in my Neighborhood 24/7 I love them and wish we had money to hire a thousand more.

      • Herschel

So SPD sent a message if you come here from Memphis or Tim buck Too and get caught selling druggs you will face their wrath . Good job and Praise God the Police wasn’t hurt and can take down some more dealers. But after someone trying to kill him with a car I would hate to be the next drugg dealer to square off with him.

  • pu5h3r

It’s sad and pathetic this is what ,”democracy” has yielded… People doing deals in parking lots and overzealous officers that happen to be trigger-happy, as well. Don’t refer to street pharmacists as trash. A good majority of them have college degrees- just saying they are probably more educated than the masses. Go and stay stagnant and don’t evolve, it’s cool, evolution has a way of leaving the timid and stubborn behind.

    • Howard Stern

And the Southaven police obviously have a way to take care of those that have ‘evolved’ into drug dealers.

      • pu5h3r

Ha. I’m with JayB on his thoughts. Why would a dealer attempt to back over a cop that he/she just ran over?? If he was UC, he definitely did not follow protocol in containing the scene. It’s Southaven, the DA is being paraded like a material witness. Bottom line, this was probably weed that NOW four individuals lives have been impacted forever- Pathetic

      • Herschel

I don’t believe in Evolution bc you can shoot holes through the theory a thousand ways. I believe God created the officers and they did a good job.

    • Robert Joseph

College degrees, that’s rich. Street pharmacist, that’s rich too. The drug dealing thug is dead. He tried to kill a cop, screw him and SMOKE him. After all the buzzards gotta eat too! No sympathy, use all thugs for target practice.

    • Arae

I agree and the Rambo wanna be cop probably ran in front of the car to stop it. Bottom line a child lost his father today because the police murdered him. When Will there be justice? This bogus war on drugs has got to end.

      • Robert Joseph

While I don’t think spending money to keep someone from doing something they will always do, calling a cop a murderer is childish. You try to run over me and I am going to use you for a bullet stop. I will END the threat. The slide on my GLOCK 33 will be locked to the rear on an empty mag and the barrel will be smoking. Anything less wouldn’t do the CRIMINAL justice.

  • JayB

The sad fact is that for some people drug dealing is a way of life. A means of getting by. To say they are evolved is a stretch. I have been on that side of the fence, and trust me evolved is not the word I would use. It’s part of the cops jobs to bust drug dealers and it is part of the drug dealers jobs not to get busted. Also, drug dealers have to look at it as a matter of when not if they get busted, and to what degree the sentencing is going to be. The problem for me is when the cops break the law to catch the “criminals”. We have laws for a reason. It does not apply to just us. It also applies to them. Breaking the law while inforcing the law is couterproductive. I cant say if the cops were justified or not. I just wasn’t there. I can say I do not trust any Desoto county police or the DA. I can’t help but wonder if the cops were dressed in plain cloths? If I was selling drugs and a bunch of dudes surrounded me wearing plain cloths, I would try to run them over too. Also if they did an undercover drug deal, how did they not see the toddler? Why did they not look at the risk of busting them in the parking lot with a child in the backseat? They could have just as easily waited and picked the guy up at his house. It’s pretty routine

    • Don

From your post, I get you voted for Obama both times.
Read below and you will understand what I mean.

The problem for me is when the cops break the law to catch the “criminals”. WHAT We have laws for a reason. It does not apply to just us. It also applies to them. I cant say if the cops were justified or not. I just wasn’t there. WHAT? I can say I do not trust any Desoto county police or the DA. I can’t help but wonder if the cops were dressed in plain cloths? WHAT? If I was selling drugs and a bunch of dudes surrounded me wearing plain cloths, I would try to run them over too. OH YEAH? Also if they did an undercover drug deal, how did they not see the toddler? Why did they not look at the risk of busting them in the parking lot with a child in the backseat? They could have just as easily waited and picked the guy up at his house. WHAT It’s pretty routine
      IT AIN’T THAT EASY BOZO….

  • bambam84

Firing INSIDE a vehicle with a CHILD, but the officers have not acted out of control? Are you kidding me? Shoot first, ask questions later. Good job, MPD.

    • Don

The child was small and could not see it. The article stated Police arrested another suspect in the car, and found a small child, who is now in the care of the Department of Human Services.

    • Don

By the way, This was South Haven police.
Had it been the MPD the director would probably have the police to “stand down'” until the driver had a chance to run over the police officer a few more times.

I would suggest you at least read the articles before you post.

  • ChrisW&Johnlickscocks

Southaven su xxx. The police their are a bunch of pos. Nope haven’t ever been in trouble either.

  • jayB

Everything I wrote makes since unless you are a bozo, so all the WHAT you put in there is pretty stupid. Funny thing is I chose to dumb it down a bit, and yet you still don’t comprehend. What does that say about you? You jump to conclusions about my political beliefs. Your right I am not a T Bager or as you might prefer a member of the T Party, but I do not believe it is ok for police to act outside of the law. FYI Desoto county does it ALL the time. Now a bozo comments on stuff they don’t understand. That’s you bozo. First when an undercover operation happens in the manner this did, the police buy they drugs from the dealer, either from an informant or the officers themselves. So during this the cop should have noticed the child in the back seat. Next, cops regular send in an informant wearing a wire and wait until the ideal time to make the bust. Like I said Bozo. It’s routine. It is just that easy. It’s so easy it happens all the time. All THE TIME. Bozo! Better yet have you ever heard of a secret endightment? Probably not, because you are a bozo. Finally, and this is something you should understand even if you are ignorant, cops serve and protect. Protect does not mean set up a drug bust in the middle of a crowded parking lot with a child in the backseat. Before you go all half cocked and say it wasn’t crowded, I happened to be by there as the tape was going up. Crowded. They put everyone’s lives in danger. The police, the drug dealer, the child’s, and everyone in that parking lot. That’s not protection. There are plenty of drug dealers with guns. What if they had one? And for the record I think the dealers should get more time for bringing the kid as well, but while charging him with child endangerment the police should be charged as well.

    The SPD do not play!!
Love it. One less on the streets. The baby in the hands of people who care & mama’s check is stopped. Ha!

  • mr matt

good job southaven, send a message across the stateline to these punks. how could anyone defend a guy who took a baby on a drug deal, a drug deal that most likely wasnt a dime bag of weed. that would have been dumbas dads fault baby got shot

    • Joe Bo

What I don’t get is why that probably 1 out of 5 people I meet, originally come from Mississipp. Wish you folks would just keep your trash on your side of the stateline.
