MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Two firefighters were injured while responding to a fire at a Greater Hope Baptist, located at 2660 Spottswood.

One firefighter fell and hurt his knee, and the other suffered steam burns to his face and ears.

It took 35 minutes to put the fire out. The sanctuary was saved, but the office and classroom were destroyed.

John Hunt called 9-1-1 to report the fire.

"I ran over and everybody was in the gym part," he said. "I got everybody to come out and move their cars, and made sure no one was inside the church."

Firefighters are still trying to determine what caused the fire, although the pastor said he believes it was an electrical issue.

"We had someone steal our air conditioners three weeks ago," Pastor Dannie Holmes said. "I guess in replacing it, an error was made."

He's in disbelief at what happened and hopes the church will rebuild.

"God is still alive and well. Jesus is still on the throne, and he knows what is going on."
