MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A gun went off in a movie theater when it fell from a man’s pants pocket.

An off-duty officer was in the theater and detained the man until police arrived at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday.

George Gholson’s .38 caliber two-shot derringer was loaded with one live round.

While he sat watching the movie at the Malco Cordova Cinema, the gun fell out of his pocket, hit the floor, and fired.

There were about 18 people in the theater, but luckily no one was hit.

Police were unable to locate the round’s point of impact.

The theater has a ‘no weapons’ policy, so Gholson was charged with prohibition of certain meetings-posting notice.

He was also charged with felony reckless endangerment,

I wish it would have hit his dum as, scary to think who is running around with loaded metal and are so negligent

crappy firearm with no hammer block safety
2 shot derringer with only 1 loaded chamber
    no holster

    – yea, doubt this guy had a carry permit

    • Low Profile

So right. He should’ve gotten a glock at least. They don’t fire when dropped – can safely double as hammers. But, no holster? Can you say “idiot”? I doubt he has a permit too. They teach responsibility in those classes. Unfortunately, common sense can’t be taught.

If he didn’t have a permit there would have been more charges. They teach responsibility starting in kindergarten that doesn’t mean people pay attention.

Only one round in the chamber? Only one shot to save his life if he found himself in a defense situation? Well, that decides it. This man must be suicidal anyway.

Well, heck, most of us have long known that men can’t keep anything in their pants. What’s new here?

I don’t know why Mr. Gholson looks so angry in the photograph. He should be happy the stray bullet didn’t hit a moviegoer!

A very good way to get shot by all the armed patrons is to NOT control your firearm in a safe manner!!!
“The theater has a ‘no weapons’ policy, so Gholson was charged with prohibition of certain meetings-posting notice.” This notice does not apply to properly licensed concealed carried firearms in a public theater.
