(Clayton, GA) A student’s tongue-in-cheek yearbook quote is threatening to ruin her senior year.
Paris Gray is a senior class vice president, a member of SADD, the Beta Club, and a leader on campus.
All that may not matter when it comes to whether she gets to graduate next week.
In her area of the yearbook, Gray used elements from the periodic chart to spell out, “To back that a** up.”
The message was: “When the going gets tough just remember to Barium, Carbon, Potassium, Thorium, Astatine, Arsenic, Sulfur, Uranium, Phosphorus.”
“I think their reaction was beyond what it should have been because nobody understood it,” said Paris Gray told WSB-TV.
An in-school suspension was issued that kept from participating in a senior walk.
“My first reaction was, you are such a nerd,” said Gray’s mother Zarinah Woods.
Administrators were not pleased.
Paris is supposed to give the inspirational speech at the graduation ceremony, but she said she was told that will not happen.
“It just completely destroyed me, and my mom’s been telling me don’t let it ruin my happiness but it’s like really taking a big toll,” Gray to WSB-TV.
A school district spokesperson said no decision has been made yet about graduation.
