(Memphis) Former Owner of the Memphis Grizzlies Michael Heisley passed away Saturday afternoon.

Heisley’s health had been declining after he suffered a stroke last year.

He orchestrated the move of the team from Vancouver to Memphis in 2001.

He was 77-years-old.

Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. tells us in a statement “I join with the people of Memphis in mourning the passing of former Grizzlies owner, Michael Heisley.

Even with all of the excitement around Memphis Grizzlies playoff basketball, our celebration is tinged with sadness over this news.

The term ‘Believe Memphis’ has been a rallying cry for our team and even our city.

Michael Heisley inspired this phrase with the faith he placed in Memphis when he relocated the team here from Vancouver in 2001.

Memphis will forever remember his legacy and his belief in this city and our people.

Our hearts are definitely united in extending our prayers and thoughts to his wife, Agnes and the entire Heisley family.”
