(WREG-TV) Today is Earth day, when the focus is put on the unique environmental challenges of our times.

We live in a world where social media is just as popular and just as fast about spreading messages, which is why NASA is combining Earth Day and social media.

According to CNN, NASA is kicking off a global selfie event for Earth Day.

You can take part by snapping a picture of yourself and posting it to one of five social media websites using #globalselfie to mark it.

NASA will upload your pictures to create an assortment image of Earth.

Earth Day was started by former Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson, in 1969 after witnessing an oil spill in Santa Monica, California.
