(Donetsk, Ukraine) There are numerous reports Jews Donetsk, in the eastern Ukraine, are being told to “register” with Ukrainians who want the area to become part of Russia.
A flyer orders Jews 16 and older to register or be deported, stripped of their citizenship and have their belongings seized.
There are concerns this is reminiscent of what happened in Nazi Germany.
There are also those who are suspicious because Russia has been saying the area has been taken over by fascists and neo-Nazis and arguing that’s why it should take over the area.
The question is whether the flyer is real or Kremlin propaganda.
When they register, they are told to pay a $50 fee and list all property they own and vehicles they own.
“In the year 2014, after all of the miles travelled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable, it’s grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable,” US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters after crisis talks in Geneva on Ukraine.
The flyer has the seal of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk according to the International Business Times though the leader of that groups denies involvement.
USA Today reported, “The reason is because the leaders of the Jewish community of Ukraine supported Bendery Junta, a reference to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement that fought for Ukrainian independence at the end of World War II, “and oppose the pro-Slavic People’s Republic of Donetsk,” a name adopted by the militant leadership.”
