Memphis, TN-The University of Memphis football team went through a brisk, hour-plus workout Thursday afternoon at the Billy J. Murphy Athletic Complex to wrap up spring practices.
As the Tigers took the first step in closing out spring, Thursday’s practice continued to focus on fundamentals and the kicking game. It was capped by position groups going through drills as part of a coaches clinic.
Now the Tigers turn their attention to what is officially practice No. 15 but is known as the Blue-Gray Spring game which is slated for Friday night at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. A tailgate party beginning at 5 p.m. on Tiger Lane starts the evening, and following the traditional Tiger Walk at 6, kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Liberty Bowl.
Friday night’s game will feature a more experienced squad (the Blue Team) taking on a team of younger players (the Gray Team). The game will be played over four, 20-minute quarters with a running clock. The Gray team will be spotted a lead to begin the game.
“I am anxious to see our older guys band together and play together,” said Memphis head coach Justin Fuente. “They have been going at it so long – the last 14 practices. Also I look forward to seeing how the young guys take on the challenge.”
In addition to the running clock, the game will feature some shortcuts in the kicking game but will be a live scrimmage.
Fuente said the goal for Friday is for nobody to get hurt.
“We had a really good scrimmage last Saturday,” he said. “I hope Friday night our kids go out and play hard and put on a good show. But a lot of our evaluation for this spring is done. I want the kids to go play hard and enjoy themselves.”
