New Interstate Interchange Unlikely

(Horn Lake, MS) Jolene Godwin told us Southaven has great shopping, if you could just get there.

“Traffic on Goodman is the most horrendous mess there is. It doesn’t matter what light, which intersection you’re at. It’s just horrible.”

She likes the idea of an interstate interchange at Nail Road and I-55 that would come in just to the South of Southaven Towne Center.

DeSoto County leaders have pushed the idea for years, but learned at a recent economic development meeting, it will probably never happen.

”I was very disappointed when I heard the news. Everybody in Horn Lake much prefers an interchange and I believe it would help Southaven just as much as it would Horn Lake.”

Not only would it bring new traffic, and potentially more business to Horn Lake and Southaven, it would also connect Nail that’s split by I-55.

So what’s the problem?

Transportation officials say Nail Road sits too close to Goodman, about a half mile to the north, and Church, about a mile to the south, and the three interchanges would sit too close together.

Mississippi Transportation leaders say they don’t have the money, and there’s no way the Federal Highway Administration will pay for it.

Horn Lake Mayor Allen Latimer says it’s a critical project for his city.

”It is a major economic development issue with us.”

While there’s some hope an overpass will connect Nail, Latimer says that’s not good enough, ”I want an interchange.”

If it ever came up for a vote, Jolene Godwin says most people would support an interchange to make the going easier.

”It would be easier to get to certain sides of town versus other sides of town, so yes, I think it would.”

That’s why DeSoto leaders say they don’t intend to give up their pursuit of the project.

    Just like I55, 65, 95. 40, 10 etc, they were built over decades with the most populated/needed/politically connected areas being built first and rural areas having to wait until noone else cares. If you will notice Hwy 78 is still the “future” I22 corridor with sections in Alabama, Colorado and California as far as i know that are all that have been completed.
