(Memphis) Several families are homeless after a massive fire swept through an apartment building in Cordova overnight.

The two-alarm fire broke out around 12:20 a.m. at the Trinity Lakes Apartments off Germantown Parkway north of Cordova Road.

The fire quickly destroyed the three-story building. It took nearly 100 firefighters to bring the flames under control.

Neighbors say they heard a scream, a loud blast and then saw the fire.

"The apartment heated up. It was really hot and we thought the fire would come through our apartment, so we got our things and got out," said tenant Miranda Foushee.

"We started banging on doors trying to make sure everyone was OK, " said Foushee.

Firefighters say everyone inside the building was able to get out safely and there were no injuries.

The fire was started by a barbecue grill on a balcony.

The American Red Cross is now assisting six families.
