(Raleigh, NC) The Memphis Tigers beat George Washington 71-66 Friday evening.

The Tigers held the lead the entire game, and will play again Sunday against either Virginia or Coastal Carolina.

This is the second straight year the Tigers have won their tournament opener.

WREG’s Glenn Carver is traveling with the team and will have complete coverage after the games.

Fans at the Fox and Hound bar in East Memphis had high hopes for the game, and cheered after every basket.

It's Memphis, it's March. You've got to pull for the Tigers," fan Nick Scull said.

He was there for an alumni party, which was made up of fans who bleed blue.

"Back in undergrad, I camped outside for 13 hours in the cold with no food, with no sleep, to watch my Tigers play," Scull said. "That's how dedicated I am."

Although the Tigers never lost the lead, the score got a little too close for comfort for some fans.

"I really dint think it was going to be that close," Alvin Thomas said. "I was thinking they would win by ten."

"It's the NCAA tournament, it's close games. And that's what the excitement is all about, close games. It's going to help us win the next one because we will be ready for a close game," fan Liz Marable said.

And come Sunday night, these fans will get to do this all over again.
