(WREG-TV) Making some extra money in the Mid-South just got a little easier with a new website, Relay Rides, that lets you rent your car when you are not using it.
Travis Sims is driving like a boss.
"I'm in a Camaro," Sims said.
Many people would love to drive her car.
Since she cannot drive it all the time, a new website lets her rent it out for cash.
RelayRides.com promises to "put your idle car to work for you."
In other words, rent it out when you aren't using it.
"The average owner on Relay Rides is making about $250 a month, with many other folks making upwards of $1,000 dollars a month," Steven Webb, spokesperson for Relay Rides, said.
And it's easy. Car owners just post pictures to the website and name their price. Most cars rent for around $30 to $50 a day.
Thousands of people are signing up across the country, but pickings are slim in Memphis, with only five cars available online.
"A lot of people got licenses but they shouldn't have them. Everybody can't drive," Sims said.
The website said it thought of the concern and takes 25 percent of the rental to use toward money for a $1 million liability policy. They keep what is left over.
"In the worse case scenario or a minor fender bender, you're not on the hook and your insurance is not on the hook," Webb said.
The company said it requires renters to have good driving records. Additionally, the owner and renter grade one another on a series of things, including cleanliness.
However, despite all of the attention to detail, Sims is driving away from this trend.
"I think it's an okay idea if that's what people want to do, but I don't think I would do that," Sims said.
