U Of M Frat Members Arrested For Hazing Ritual

(Memphis) A University of Memphis fraternity is in the spotlight after several of its members end up in jail.

Several members of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi are charged with assault after police say they went overboard with a hazing ritual.

At least two fraternity brothers spent Monday bonding out of jail accused of beating new members with a stick.

Keenan Alexander says he thought about joining the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi but changed his mind when he heard about the hazing from his best friend who is a member.

“I know a little bit about initiation. There are some things you have to do,” said Alexander. “I know he said he went through some hard stuff.”

Police say members of the frat went a little too far this time when they flogged a student multiple times on his butt with a wooden stick and punched him in the chest with a closed fist.

Police say frat leader Adrian Bond ordered the beating for new Kappa Alpha Psi members.

They were students who were already members last year, but according to Bond, needed additional pledging this year.

Stephon Coleman, 23, was also arrested  for the crime.

“It is more of a gang because to get beaten like that to just be a brother, it sounds more like a gang  because a gang situation they do the same thing,” said Alexander.

Kappa Alphi Psi doesn’t have a Memphis frat house but does have a local chapter.

We contacted the fraternity on its website asking for comment on the accusations.

We haven’t heard back.

Kappa Alphi Psi is a historic black fraternity that’s been around since the early 1900s with more than 150,000 members nationwide.

Alexander isn’t one of them, “After I heard about stuff like that, I never wanted to be in a fraternity. I want to do my own thing.”

Comment like those show more about prejudices of the commenter than anything else.

That being said, I thought frats and sororities had stopped doing this kind of thing.

Pledging is real and necessary. The violence, however, is not. There is a difference in pledging and hazing but People often get this confused. I am a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. I am the president of my collegiate chapter. Let me be clear, the fraternities and sororities do not Haze nor condone hazing. Individuals, however, may decide to “Haze.” Homab David Carter.

This is just crazy!! I crossed 13 years ago and have not been involved in the pledge process for about 5 years now. it just too much to deal with and its illegal. People are going to jail!!

I must concur with the brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. How is this hazing if the young men were already brothers? It sounds like these guys involved in other activities. I also would like to know, who was the rat. This wasn’t something that should have been reported to a news agency.
I was the president of my chapter at ASU and the NPHC president. I understand hazing and its consequences. I also understand pledging. There is a marked difference between the two. As BGLO members it is up to us to put a halt to this hazing before we are lawsuited out of existence.

“We don’t like to talk about race because we are in post racial society. When it comes to crime in this city, it is young black males between the ages of 17 and 24 years,”

Hazing can happen to members and no members… by definition it is Hazing is any action taken or situation created intentionally:
•that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule
    •risks emotional and/or physical harm
•to members of an group or team
    •whether new or not
•regardless of the person’s willingness to participate

Please son’t let this story deter anyone from becoming a member of the Divine Nine. There is real history and there is a connection that comes with membership. You can not judge an entire group on a few individuals. The brotherhood and sisterhood that we have in our different groups are above all others. I don’t like when they make incidents into things that of individuals against the whole group. If it was not for the Divine Nine we would not have the importance of our issue moved to the front and taken notice. The history of these fraternity and sororities are something we can be proud of. Rememer HAZING and PLEDGING are two different things.

Near 30 yrs as a Black Greek. A legacy. With a brother now about to join the family. I don’t like to hear members of any organization subject to the brutal hazing which I did in 1986. However I understood what I was getting myself into and never ever once thought about dropping a dime. My chapter was notorious for it pledge program. While I strongly disagree with the current attitudes of our black Greek organizations. I certain disagree with any and everyone having excess to them. MANY ARE CALLED, BUT FEW ARE CHOOSEN

This problem can easily be solved…..if you are not with what it takes, DON’T TRY TO JOIN….its simple…..don’t mess up someone else’s life b/c you feel ENTITLED…..just be something else or NOTHING at all…..

You’re an idiot!! There have been situations where people have died from Stupid fraternities.and sororities hazing people. Yet you say if you don’t have what it takes don’t pledge? Why must you beat me for me to be your brother/sister. That’s stupidity at its finest.

You are looking at being sued if you start that/ Although I agree with you, I can hear it now” I didn’t make it because I’m black/white/green/” then, there you go! What needs to happen to these boys is ti be taught a lesson by other brothers.

There is no pledging in Kappa Alpha Psi and there hasn’t been since Spring of 1989. In fact , I was the last line to pledge in the Delray Beach Alumni Chapter and hazing was taboo then according to the Scroller manual. Moreover I told during my interest interview that I didn’t pledge in school because if any man other than my father put a hand on me I would try to make sure they drew back a nub. Of course they didn’t believe me until I. Choke slammed one of them. But I digress, after spring of 89 on advice of counsel that included illustrious brothers like Johnny Cochrane and former US District Court now US Congressman Alcee Hastings we had nearly a yearlong moratorium on Pledging. Then after still more incidents of hazing, the most serious I believe was at SW Missouri, all pledging was banned. Therefore we now have intake at central location with the Provincial Pole arch other Provincial Officers and sometimes national officers present precisely to prevent this type of foolishness to take place. In fact I watched my nephew cross in Jacksonville Fla. 2 years ago along with over 100 other young men from all the Southeast Province. He came from Stillman College in Alabama while his best friend came from FAU in Boca Raton Florida. They underwent a process by which they became full fledged members of Kappa Alpha Psi, further they were informed that the quickest way to loose your letters was to haze or allow yourself to be hazed. To make a long story short I hope these sadistic idiots who did the hazing do some serous time and those gullible knuckleheads who allowed themselves to be hazed lose their letters because they are too stupid to be in my fraternity!!!

If you’re going to use the classic definition for Hazing then students must sue the state for such high tuitions and fees members… by definition it is Hazing is any action taken or situation created intentionally:
•that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule
    •risks emotional and/or physical harm
•to members of an group or team
    •whether new or not
•regardless of the person’s willingness to participate

because until you get that first bill your education was fre.

Wasn’t calling u cat. I was referring to members who still had to take that wood. The only time I’ve seen that happen is when a person drops off the line and still goes through the intake process. Later, if they don’t wanna be labeled “cat” and get the respect that comes with pledging, they gotta take that wood.

Most of these comments show the mentality of adolescent UG that still don’t get/understand the consequences of their actions. You think that being a tough guy is going to get you a job? What does you giving me 1000 push ups prove? That you have determination and will do what it takes, to get what you want? What does corporal damage equates to in the future? Do you put that on your resume? Your level of intelligence by publishing affirmative statements such as “XX chapter and we pledge” or claiming and affirming any of the allegations in this article is the stupidest thing you could’ve ever done.

    Alexander,

Be on the best side of the equation by avoiding greekdom and advising others to do the same. Godly, Wise, Intelligent, Suave, Secure, Sophisticated, and Mature men have nothing to do with the immaturity and ignorance that is embedded in the greek system. It’s a complete waste of time and money and we avoid it like the plague ….

You don’t need them nor should you want them, despite their propoganda they try to push. I been recruited by every fraternity by undergrad and grad chapters and ABSOLUTELY NO! can’t fly out my mouth fast enough. Most of those guys are strange, openly disgusting and so annoying, even the ones I’m “cool with” instantly became off-putting when they put on those letters or got around/talk about greek stuff.

These men are deceiptful, exploitative, liars, of weak character, extremely insecure …. trust me you don’t want to have to call them “brothers” or be officially affilliated with that. Beside true brotherhood is a natural relationship built on like-mindness, respect, and chemistry, it’s not something forced.

Fraternities and Sororites are so lame and detrimental. They will be forever be overshawed by the hazing, fighting, lawsuits, obnoxious behavior, suspenseions and expolsions, cult-like behavior, godless idolatry than any community or so-called acts of brotherhood and sisterhood. I can go all day destroying them … it’s so easy it’s not funny.

Trust me God is happy with you not being greek! That matters beyond anything …. So remain just african-american and I wish the best of luck with your studies and career young man lol

I am a member of two perstigious fraternaties mason and greek, Pledging leaves a lasting impression on your mind my bridge builders taught me knowledge and impressed on me hw to be a good bruh. people will only do to you what you allow them to do. Know your capabilities and limitations. MSPU is your hallmark in Omega. This story is a story or individuals who forgot their worth to the organization and were gullible. 4-ZI-01

Son please … you’re been brainwashed heavily. The only greek organization that is prestigious and reputable world-wide is Phi Beta Kappa which is an honor society exclusively for smart students.

The cults you in are counterfeit prestige and will forever lack substance. They convince people like you it’s prestigious to take your money … apparently it’s still working. Get in Phi Beta Kappa then we can talk #byefelicia.

      • Zo

Daughter, I been selected to be a member of that too Phi Betta Kappa. But I dont see honor societies performing food drives and mentoring kids. Bless you smart student.

    • The Truth

Oh please. If you were truly in Phi Beta Kappa you should know that 95% of campus organizations do acts of community service especially a legitimate chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

In fact, just everybody I know does some act of community service so it’s nothing unique or to brag about.

Grow up! Get a life! Your frats are silly and brainwashing factories.

I hate to inform you all that for something to be hazing it does not matter if you are a member or not. Though it can be in regards to initiation it also related to affiliation with an organization.

“Hazing” means any intentional or reckless act in Tennessee on or off the property of any higher education institution by one (1) student acting alone or with others which is directed against any other student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of that student, or which induces or coerces a student to endanger such student’s mental or physical health or safety. “Hazing” does not include customary athletic events or similar contests or competitions, and is limited to those actions taken and situations created in connection with initiation into or affiliation with any organization; and

Gomab David and Johnathon. It is important for the public to not form opinions on the fraternities or members based on one article. As my fellow Greek from APA stated, if they were already members then it’s not pledging. Allow the story to fully develop, let’s not assume. Peace and love.
