Mid-South Food Bank Feeds Growing Need

(Southaven, MS) Most people consider DeSoto among the Mid-South’s most affluent counties, and that’s true, but the population boom here has brought people from all walks of life, including many who need a little help from the food bank that’s growing to meet their needs.

David Robertson lined up at noon Wednesday with thousands of others for a food bank giveaway that didn’t start until three in the afternoon.

He says that’s how much the help he gets here means to him.

”It’s rough, but the food and everything from the food bank, it helps us.”

And food bank organizers point out that the need, especially in North Mississippi, keeps growing.

That’s why they’ve expanded into more than a dozen Counties here.

”In May, it’ll be two years that we’ve done this program and we started out with about 40 volunteers providing to about 300 households” explained Anna Dickerson with the Mid-South Food Bank.

And that’s just DeSoto County.

Dickerson says the help of volunteers and groups across the area helps them feed a growing need.

”I’m here to help out the people today. I want to give back to the community,” said Southaven High Student Desmond Ferrell.

DeSoto leaders say as the population grows here, so grows the need.

”A lot of people assume that just because we’re a very fortunate County there’s not much need, but there are a lot of people in DeSoto County that are between the cracks or just need some extra help,” Dickerson said.

Families can get enough meat, grain, fruits and vegetables to last about a week, and David Robertson says it’s an important lifeline to more and more people he knows.

”When I came eight months ago the crowd was probably five or six hundred people and now it’s probably between two and three thousand” said Robertson.

The food bank operates through churches on a voucher system.

Food bank leaders say with the help and support of community groups, they’ll keep expanding to meet the growing need.
