Memphis Airport Uses Twitter, Facebook To Connect To Passengers

(Memphis) These days when you check your smartphone or tablet, chances are you’ll see that Memphis International Airport has taken flight on social media.

Ray Paris was the airport seeing off his stepdaughter. He’s glad the airport will be using social media to communicate with passengers.

“It helps a lot of people because a lot of people don’t know to go their website to find out things that are going on and Twitter, a lot of young people use Twitter and Facebook,” Paris said.

The airport, along with the Shelby County Airport Authority, is now officially using Twitter and Facebook to better engage with airline passengers.

Glen Thomas is the airport’s public information officer.

“Well, we really feel it’s essential that an entity like the Memphis Airport communicate with the public through social media,” Thomas said.

A few days ago, the airport tweeted “All flights to and from Newark cancelled. One Dallas departure and arrival cancelled, as well as one Charlotte arrival.”

The airport will also use its Facebook page to post multimedia such as photos and video.

Both accounts will be active during weekdays and business hours.

Bill Sanford was flying out of the airport, heading to Cleveland.

“I think it’ll be beneficial to current updating events, any type of changes, weather, what have you,” Sanford said.

For example, this Thursday, Twitter and Facebook will be used to update the public about the future of the airport terminal and possible plans for additional airlines and new flights.

It’s one way the airport hopes to make the travel experience better for passengers flying in and out of Memphis.

“It allows us to provide real-time updates to any emerging issues, also updates on projects and simply answer questions and gather feedback,” Thomas said.
