Informed Sources: Kellogg’s Lockout

(Memphis) The Kellogg’s lockout is shifting into a higher gear.

Two city council members and a county commissioner say they’re ready to join picketing workers and camp out with them.

The New York Times also wrote a piece about the dispute.

And a Kellogg’s corporate big-wig wrote a guest editorial about how much its workers are paid in wages and benefits that had a lot of folks thinking, ‘Maybe I’ll go work at Kellogg’s.”

    Why is Kellogg’s workers making that much? It isn’t because Kellogg’s is generous because Kellogg’s hasn’t gave a raise in over 25 years. It’s because of a negotiated benefit of COLA (cost of living allowance) and it still doesn’t figure a lot of things into it like gas prices, housing etc. All of this brings up a good question. If their workers are paid that much because they’ve kept up (somewhat) cost of living then that means if you’re not making that much then you’re job hasn’t kept up with COL. So it would be suffice to say that Kellogg’s workers aren’t being paid too much it’s that most people aren’t paid enough. That’s why people are struggling.
    Before you consider working for Kellogg’s consider these things:
    :It’s a 7 day a week operation which means forced overtime.
    :You won’t know if you have the weekend off until the Thursday before the weekend.
    :they can and will force their workers to work 16 hrs without prior notice.
    :they only hire you as a casual (temp) first. You will be on 24 hour call, you have to report in within 1 hour as you’re called, you have no benefits, there is no time frame to be hired in (I’ve seen 8 yr casuals), then I’ve seen them hire people off the street instead of hiring current casual (total slap in the face).
    Consider some of these facts, the money isn’t always worth it, and it comes at a cost.

    To answer the guy’s question at the end as to “what can the workers do if they want to go back to work?”
    The answer is simple. They cannot go back to work. This is not a strike, this is a lockout. It’s funny how the company fails to mention the fact that they can allow the employees to work PAST the contract expiration (that has happened during other contract negotiations). They can continue to work under the old contracts rules until a new one gets ratified.

    I can also attest to your point that we work 7 days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day without more than 2 hours notice. This is not some dream job these company mouthpieces are portraying. Not everyone is willing to sacrifice their personal lives to make this kind of money and benefits.

    WREG: do some research and tell both sides of the story next time.

    As I watched this video and read the article not one time does it mention that after they pay all their hourly wages and benefits Kellogggs still makes 3.63 million dollars a day! CORPORATE GREED is all this is about!

    The panel interview is hardly a balanced news coverage. It is downright shameful that WREG holds themselves out to be an informed source. They seem to be carrying the flag for Kellogg’s. Do your homework WREG. Why would you endorse the American workers pay and benefits go down even further simply because it has become a somewhat successful trend due to corporate greed? This is a despicable attempt on Kellogg’s part. Honor your contract Kellogg’s and stop trying to do away with the union.
