(Memphis) After allegations of sex and drug paraphernalia in the East High School basement, Shelby County Schools revealed what they found during their investigation.
Someone with access to East High sent WREG video they had taken of used condoms and drug paraphernalia, in what they called the basement of the school.
After a week of dodging questions, the district said in a statement Wednesday that officials found unused condoms, but no evidence of drug use, in what it says is a mechanical/storage area.
Parents we spoke with at the school Wednesday night were disturbed by the findings.
“I’m an alumni from the school. I graduated from it, so to hear about that is totally unacceptable,” parent Mel Bland said. “I’m very worried about that.”
“When I asked one of the teachers about it, they said it could be old or could be current because it was a tunnel,” parent Tekelia Byrd said.
A former East High teacher first told WREG about the problem a year ago. That teacher also said he or she told the principal.
But after interviewing current staff, the district said, “There was no evidence that anyone ever complained or notified the school administration about the alleged misconduct.”
The entrance has been fortified, and security cameras installed, which is something parents say is needed.
“They need to especially in the basement. I graduated back in 1996 and the basement has never been a secured area, so I totally agree they need to put cameras down there,” Bland said.
The district, which hasn’t confirmed if the video was taken inside East High, said it plans on making the entrance even more secure.
The district’s full statement:
Shelby County Schools has concluded its investigation into allegations of misconduct in East High School’s mechanical/storage area. District administrators interviewed the school administration, security and maintenance personnel. There was no evidence that anyone ever complained or notified the school administration about the alleged misconduct.
The District also inspected the mechanical/storage area at East High school during its investigation. During its inspection, district officials did discover unused condoms in the area but did not find any evidence of drug use. The area is locked and off limits to students. Only authorized personnel have access to the secured area. The District has taken additional steps to fortify the entrance to the area and installed security cameras in the entry way.
