(Starkville, MS) The largest civil rights group seeking equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people says the City of Starkville has passed a resolution making it clear that the city is intolerant of discrimination against anyone and in any form.

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, in a statement Tuesday thanked the city’s Board of Alderman for passing an equality resolution and becoming the first municipality in Mississippi to “recognize the dignity of its LGBT residents.”

Griffin says the city’s action sends a message to its residents that all people – regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity – are worthy of respect and equality. He says Mayor Parker Wiseman and the Starkville City Council are “setting an inspiring example” for their counterparts in surrounding cities and towns.
