(Jackson, TN) The 16-year-old student arrested after Thursday’s shooting at Liberty Tech has been charged.

Another student was shot in the leg outside of a school building around dismissal time Thursday.

Police say the two students had fought earlier about a female student, then got into an altercation during dismissal. That’s when the 16-year-old student shot the unarmed 17-year-old.

The 16-year-old, who has not been identified, is charged with aggravated assault, carrying a weapon on school property, alteration of an item with permanent distinguishing numbers because the serial numbers had been altered on the handgun, and tampering with evidence.

A judge set his bond at $20,000 and ruled he must live with his mother in middle Tennessee, except for appointments with an attorney.

The 16-year-old was released in lieu of bond at about 2 p.m.

According to Jackson police, the District Attorney’s Office has indicated it will try to have the teen tried as an adult.
