(Jackson, MS) A child from North Mississippi with chronic underlying health conditions has died from influenza, the State Department of Health reported Monday.

Since pediatric flu deaths became reportable in the 2007-2008 season, there have been 12 reported in Mississippi.

The only strain of the flu recognized in Mississippi this season is an H1N1 strain, which MSDH says has recently affected mostly people under 65 years old.

“This is another serious reminder that it is important for people of all ages to get the flu vaccination,” said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs. “Fortunately, this year’s flu vaccine includes coverage for the H1N1 strain that is currently circulating throughout the state.”
