“Thanksgivukkah” Blends Holidays

(East Memphis) Sandra Reyes prepared for a stampede of people coming to pick up pre-packaged holiday meals.

”It’s important to be organized. That’s the only way you can get things done and accomplished and not have everybody crowded up.”

This year it’s even bigger because Thanksgiving falls on the first day of Hanukkah.

It’s kept Holy Cow Deli owner Shelly Ostrow busy cooking for days now.

“We’ve never had a chance to blend an American holiday like Thanksgiving with a Jewish holiday like Hannukkah.”

Folks are calling it “Thanksgivukkah.”

The name may sound familiar if you’re a fan of the ’90s TV show “The OC.” In one episode, one of the characters made up a holiday called “Chrismukkah” to help his non-Jewish adopted brother.

Christmas and Hanukkah often coincide, but rarely does it happen with Thanksgiving.

Apparently it’s only happened twice since 1863.

”Hanukkah is always on the same Hebrew day every year, but because it’s a lunar calendar, it shifts and can be anywhere from the end of November to the very end of December,” said Ostrow.

One physicist claims it won’t happen again for more than 70,000 years.

Holy Cow Deli started taking orders for its Thanksgivukkah menu about a month ago, but they say orders really came flooding in during the last couple of weeks.

It features latkes, or potato pancakes made from sweet potatoes, along with the regular kind.

”We did a turkey dish called a Turlatke where we took a latke stuffing and rolled it into a turkey breast,” Ostrow explained.

Some places are even making ‘Turbrisket,’ which seems self-explanatory.

“It seems like a lot of people are having fun with it. They’ll light their ‘Menurkeys,’” said Ostrow.

“We’ll make sure we get it done quickly and smoothly so people can go with their family and get started on their meal, because everybody needs to be home by sundown,” said Reyes.

The Jewish holiday begins at sundown.
