(Memphis) More than 200 volunteers spent time this weekend packing Thanksgiving boxes that will go out to 1,350 homes this week.
“We have to make up all the boxes which takes two days and then on the third day the nonperishable goods are distributed,” said Ruth Banks who began Feed the Needy 19 years ago.
When they began, they only had 50 boxes. Over the years they have built up to 1,350. Banks estimates over 5,300 people will be feed by the baskets.
“You have a bottle of Wesson oil in there, there's the oil, you have the peanut butter, you have the saltine crackers, you have tuna,” said Banks as she went through one of the boxes.
The days of packing boxes will culminate on Tuesday when a large 18-wheeler full of turkeys arrives at the warehouse. The turkeys will then be put into boxes and then the baskets will be delivered to homes.
“One of the most saddest thing, is when you go to some of the senior living homes and you only have x number of boxes and you have seniors there wanting a food basket and they're crying,” said Banks.
Feed the Needy has already determined who will receive the baskets this year. They hope to expand their efforts each year.
